Neuromodulation Increases Decision Speed in Dynamic Environments

چکیده
Neuromodulation is considered a key factor in learning and memory in biological neural networks. Recent computational models of modulated plasticity have shown increased learning capabilities also in artificial neural networks. In this study, a rewardbased dynamic scenario is employed to test networks evolved with modulatory dynamics. The analysis on the networks shows that neuromodulation does not only allow for better learning, but accelerates the computation in decision processes. This appears to derive from topological features in modulatory networks displaying more direct sensorymotor connections, whereas non-modulatory networks require longer pathways for signal processing. This computational advantage in increased decision speed could contribute to unveil the fundamental role of neuromodulation in neural computation.

Effects of Moving Landmark’s Speed on Multi-Robot Simultaneous Localization and Mapping in Dynamic Environments
Even when simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) solutions have been broadly developed, the vast majority of them relate to a single robot performing measurements in static environments. Researches show that the performance of SLAM algorithms deteriorates under dynamic environments. In this paper, a multi-robot simultaneous localization and mapping (MR-SLAM) system is implemented within a...
متن کاملDynamic Analysis of Moving Cables with Variable Tension and Variable Speed
Dynamic Analysis of an axially moving cable with time dependent tension and velocity isstudied in this paper. Tension force and the moving speed are assumed to be harmonic. It is found that there exists a specific value of speed in which natural frequency of the system approacheszero. This specific speed for such a critical condition is called critical speed and it will be proved thatincreasing ...

Background: The results of existing studies regarding the use of neuromodulation in fecal incontinence (FI) are contradictory and therefore, a definitive conclusion cannot be made in this regard. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to evaluate the effectiveness of neuromodulation in controlling FI in children through a systematic review. Methods: A decision was made to perform the search ...
متن کاملDimension Reduction and Dynamics of a Spiking Neural Network Model for Decision Making under Neuromodulation
Previous models of neuromodulation in cortical circuits have used either physiologically based networks of spiking neurons or simplified gain adjustments in low-dimensional connectionist models. Here we reduce a high-dimensional spiking neuronal network model, first to a four-population mean-field model and then to a two-population model. This provides a realistic implementation of neuromodulat...
متن کاملThe effects of functional electrical stimulation on walking in hereditary and spontaneous spastic paraparesis.
OBJECTIVES To investigate in people with spastic paraparesis (SP): 1) the factors contributing to foot drop and reduced toe clearance while walking; 2) short-term effects of bilateral functional electrical stimulation (FES) of the common peroneal nerve. MATERIALS AND METHODS Long term (>0.5 years) users of FES with SP were compared to matched controls (N = 11 per group). Ankle strength and ...
